The GROW model is perhaps the best known and widely used coaching model. It provides a simple and powerful framework for any coaching session. Most coaching books make reference to this model, a few of which I have listed below in the references.
I have provided a simple form for you to download which includes some questions to guide you through the GROW model as well as a blank form to complete your answers. In this instance I have used the TGROW model:
Topic : the scope and the context of the goal to be set so that it is understood and defined
Goal : the outcomes of the coaching session
Reality: a clear understanding of the topic and all its aspects
Options: an understanding of what can be done and the possibilities that exist
Wrap-up: selection of the most appropriate option and the next steps
The GROW model is best when used off-line, say when learning from something in the past, preparing for something in the future, or solving a problem. There is a useful video produced by Bob Griffiths on GROW. He has added Obstacles into the GROW model, an interesting addition:
You can use GROW by yourself or with the help of someone else asking the questions. It is usually best to get support if you are tackling a more challenging issue, though choose your support wisely!
