The Line in the Sand The Little Angel loved the beach. He loved the feel of the soft, warm sand between his toes, and the smell of sea air. He felt a warm sea breeze caress his face as he watched the waves lap the seashore. The sky was blue, and in the distance to the right, he could see the red and white lighthouse. “Its bright light would not be needed today”, thought the Little Angel. It was such a beautiful day. Looking at the lighthouse reminded him of his journey, and he looked down, with some anxiety, at the line drawn in the sand. “What does this mean?” The Little Angel asked himself. “Why can't I cross this line and continue my trip to the lighthouse?” He looked back at the footprints in the sand, retracing his steps to this point, and recalled the events of the past. He recalled the early days of the journey. He felt like a stranger in a strange land. It had all started with so much joy and hope, yet that bright light that was The Little Angel soon faded in the dark events around him. He became confused, and eventually lost. To protect himself, he became someone he was not. He shut out the other Angels who came to help him, and sought solace in meaningless tasks. He shied away from friendship and never found love, and so struggled without light for some time. Then, in the depths of a fierce storm, when The Little Angel thought all was lost, he saw the faint beam of a lighthouse. It seemed far away, yet the light spun in resonance with his soul, and he felt comforted. It lifted his spirits and gave him hope. “I need to seek The Keeper of the lighthouse, for he will guide me.” And so he started his journey of renewal. He began to open up his soul, and rediscover himself. He met other Angels on the way who supported him, and he learned many new things about himself. He strode on with growing confidence, when he came across the beach, and the line in the sand. As he looked to the lighthouse, The Little Angel saw the climax of this phase of his journey. He felt he was so close to having more answers about his journey, and the purpose to his life, when he suddenly saw his anxiety for what it was. The journey had become his life, and ironically, so had the struggle. Yet The Little Angel also knew that beyond the line, he would be able to give so much more, to help others out of their darkness, and onto their chosen path. Just then, he heard some whispers on the wind. He looked up and saw Little Angels already at the Lighthouse, beckoning him to come. The Little Angel smiled, and as the waves wiped away the traces of the line in the sand, the Little Angel stepped boldly forward. © Phil Wong 2004 |
